Where can I obtain a count of homes in a specific zip code for effective marketing?

A Contractor University Member recently utilized the Ask-The-Expert Q&A feature within the member dashboard by submitting the following question and received the response below.

Contractor Question:

“Could you help us find the website to look up number of houses in a zip code? We are looking into the process of expanding our customer base in our closer zip codes with direct mailers. I believe it was a concept mentioned in January’s Nashville bootcamp where Gary talked about using an online tool to lookup a zip code to see how many houses were in that zip code and compare it to our customer base to check if we had 20% of the market in that zip code.”

“Great question. There are great resources that are also completely free. I would start with these two based on census data. You can use census.gov or data.census.gov

Either one of these resources will gove you zip code based housing stock profiles, years built, etc..”
