How Far Should A Service Area Be?

A Contractor University Member recently utilized the Ask-The-Expert Q&A feature within the member dashboard by submitting the following question and received the response below.

Contractor Question:

“How far should the typical HVAC contractor travel?”

Contractor University Expert Response:

“There isn’t a single “correct” distance, but when you look at what most successful contractors are actually doing, some clear patterns show up. Most companies define their service areas by counties, cities, or a set number of miles from their office, with counties being the most common. A smaller group uses natural boundaries like major highways or road systems.

From a distance standpoint, almost everyone keeps their territory within reason. About 93% of contractors operate within 100 miles of their office. The largest group—around 38%—services a 51–100 mile radius, while another 34% stays within 26–50 miles. Only a small percentage go beyond 100 miles.

While expanding your service area does increase your potential customer base, it also adds drive time, scheduling challenges, higher labor costs, and lower technician efficiency. The most successful companies find a balance: they grow their footprint enough to stay busy, but not so far that response times, productivity, and profitability start to suffer.

In practice, that usually means defining a service area within 50–100 miles and using clear geographic boundaries that allow your team to work efficiently without stretching your operation too thin.”
