How Do I Provide Technical Training for My Technicians?

A Contractor University Member recently utilized the Ask-The-Expert Q&A feature within the member dashboard by submitting the following question and received the response below.

Contractor Question:

“How can we develop a training program that takes new hires with little experience and develops them into confident maintenance and level two technicians?”

Contractor University Expert Response:

“You don’t have to build everything from scratch.

EGIA just partnered with SkillCat, which gives you structured, on-demand HVAC training through a mobile app. It covers fundamentals like diagnostics, electrical, refrigerant, airflow, and system operation, so a new hire can start learning the right way from day one. It’s a good foundation for getting techs comfortable with troubleshooting instead of guessing.

If you also want hands-on training, EGIA partners with Technical Arts Center, which runs in-person technician classes. Contractor University members get a $500 discount with them. SkillCat + Technical Arts Center is a solid combo: one builds knowledge, the other reinforces it in the field.

Both will be at EPIC2026 if you want to talk to them directly.

So yes — tools like MeasureQuick are useful once a tech understands what they’re looking at. But if your goal is to take someone from “green” to confidently diagnosing systems, you still need structured technical training first. SkillCat is a good place to start, and TAC fills in the hands-on gap.”
