How Long Should a Diagnostic Visit Take?

A Contractor University Member recently utilized the Ask-The-Expert Q&A feature within the member dashboard by submitting the following question and received the response below.

Contractor Question:

“When it comes to an HVAC diagnostic, what is the amount of time you typically allot a technician to diagnose included in the standard diagnostic fee? Does the timing change for a commercial diagnostic?”

Contractor University Expert Response:

“Residential and commercial are different and unique. Commercial is going to be much higher on diagnostic unless you have a maintenance club.

Residential we allot 30-60 minutes time on average. We allow 60 min travel and diagnostic. For longer trips it’ll take around 90 minutes, depending on your radius.

I want my men to do a proper evaluation. A slower call time is okay make sure your prices are set correctly.

We are at $525 labor rate in 8 firms in a wide range of markets.”
