How Much Time Should You Spend on Training Each Week?

This week on ‘Ask the Experts,’ an HVAC Contractor in Wisconsin asked:

“How much time should I spend on training each week?”

Contractor University faculty member Gary Elekes explained that as a business owner, you know the employees on your team the best. When deciding how much training you are going to give them, you should first reflect and ask yourself how much does your team need to be trained, and which topics should be the focus of that training.

“You have to make sure that you’re looking at your technicians and what you’re asking them to do,” said Elekes. “Each job function has some responsibility that attaches itself to brand experience.”

Elekes went on to explain that your price book also impacts how much you can actually spend on training, and that a business owner may find that if they aren’t charging a high enough price, they both won’t be able to afford paying for training and won’t be able to afford the time to their staff to receive the training.

“I train daily with the service technicians,” explained Elekes. “We can go over daily metrics and focus in on exactly what it is that we did well and things that we might want to course correct based on the service department.”

“The install group we train typically weekly, and that’s going to be a combination of customer experience, personality, social style, but also technical training,” explained Elekes. “The management team meets weekly to do training as well.”
