How to Become a Company Everyone Wants to Work For

An HVAC Contractor in Nebraska asked:

How do I become the company everyone wants to work for?

“If I truly had an awesome answer, I would be a lot wealthier right now,” joked EGIA faculty member James Leichter.

Leichter went on to explain the harsh reality of hiring in the skilled trades. The industry is experiencing one of the largest workforce shortages ever, and so finding anyone to hire, let alone a good worker, will be always be a challenge in the forseeable future.

Nevertheless, Leichter explained that the best way to approach attracting new hires is to adopt a mindset where you stop seeing your current employees as just lucky to have a job. Instead, he suggests you begin treating your workers as if they were your customers.

“Put as much energy into hiring as you do selling,” said Leichter. “You have to consider it a sales call. They are not lucky to be there, you’re lucky they’re there, especially in today’s market.”

Leichter also said that if a company doesn’t need any new employees at the moment, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be looking for good candidates. Circumstances can change quickly in business, and so always knowing a few good candidates looking for positions can help you in a pinch.

James Leichter has accomplished a lot over his decades in the home services industry, founding companies like Aptora and Mr. HVAC, as well as establishing himself as a renowned industry consultant and founding faculty member of EGIA Contractor University.
