How Warranty Years Should Be Offered at Each Equipment Package Level?

A Contractor University Member recently utilized the Ask-The-Expert Q&A feature within the member dashboard by submitting the following question and received the response below.

Contractor Question:

“How should warranty years be offered at each equipment package level to reflect parts and labor?”

Contractor University Expert Response:

“Below is a sample warranty structure by package tier.

Assume your 5 positions are entry-level to premium (common in HVAC sales bundles). Adjust based on equipment cost and margins:

Position Parts Warranty Labor Warranty Rationale
Entry-Level 5 years 1 year Low-cost gear; covers basics without high exposure.
Mid-Tier 7–10 years 2 years Matches SEER 16+ installs; competitive for most sales.
Upper-Mid 10 years 3 years Builds loyalty; pair with maintenance requirements.
Premium 12 years 5 years Signals durability; upsell as extended option.
Top-Tier Lifetime / Limited 5–7 years Parts lifetime common for cheap/replaceable items; labor capped.

A few best practices matter most. Register manufacturer warranties right away, follow all manufacturer requirements, and tie extended warranties to an active maintenance agreement. If you install American Standard, make sure registration is completed promptly so customers receive the full manufacturer coverage.

You can also use a third-party provider like JB Warranties to add longer labor coverage. In some cases, it makes sense to offer extended labor warranties on mid-tier systems if a customer requests it, but pricing should still make higher-tier packages the more attractive value.

Another strong differentiator is a lifetime workmanship warranty on mid-tier packages and above. This can cover installation-related issues such as drain fittings or leveling problems. Just make sure it is clearly defined and requires the customer to keep their maintenance agreement active.”
