During this October’s Coaches’ Counsel Q&A, an HVAC Contractor in Arizona asked:
“How are you keeping your team busy during shoulder season?”
Darrel Yahinsky of Contractor University’s Next Level Coaching program explained that when business owners talk about keeping staff busy, they don’t mean sweeping the shop or wiping the counters.
Instead, Yashinsky explained that downtime can be a useful opportunity to expose staff members to new areas they haven’t worked on before, such as getting involed in a company’s marketing efforts.
“One of the things we talk about a lot with our members is performance-based pay,” said Yashinsky. “Would it be fair to say to an employee, ‘I’ll give you $20 an hour to help the company market?”
These tasks can be useful to catch any customer needs that haven’t been met yet, but it isn’t the only way to spend your staff’s spare time.
“We can most certainly provide some guidance in keeping your team ‘busy,'” said Yashinsky. “But it comes back to ‘how many calls do I need?’ If I know how many calls I need, I can then put a plan in place to help us build that through a marketing effort and/or training effort.”
