Snapshot Survey Results | Expanding Your Workforce

In the May 2023 Snapshot Survey, we asked contractors about their approach to expanding their workforce. Here’s one survey question and its results from the “Expanding Your Workforce” summary report, which will be available in its entirety to EGIA members on 6/23/23.

Have you ever had to turn down work due to lack of available workforce?

EGIA Snapshot Survey - Expanding Your Workforce

Turning down work due to a lack of available workforce has significant implications for contracting businesses, as it can lead to missed opportunities for revenue, growth and losing out on valuable contracts and clients. When asked, 80% of contractors shared that they have had to turn down work due to a lack of available workforce in our recent survey. Contracting businesses rely heavily on positive referrals and word-of-mouth to secure future projects. When customers are repeatedly turned away, it can lead to dissatisfaction and a loss of confidence in the contractor’s ability to deliver on commitments. This can result in clients seeking alternative contractors, leading to a loss of long-term business opportunities. To ensure that every lead is capitalized upon, it is important that contracting businesses have processes in place to effectively expand their workforce as demand grows.

Here’s what an HVAC contractor from Maryland said in the survey:

“We are always looking to hiring experienced licensed technicians, and have tried many avenues of advertising open positions. We strive to retain our current and any new employees with high salaries, benefits, summer vacations, employee appreciation events, but are often turning business away for lack of trained employees.”
